Ozon Bank from abroad: the app is gone from Google Play. What now?

In short

The Ozon Bank app was removed from Google Play on August 12, 2026, because of sanctions, but according to the bank, an already installed app keeps working, and you can log in to your account through a browser. On October 10, the finance.ozon.ru home page opened from our server abroad with a trusted certificate, although our probe more often saw an anti-bot check page. Through the Russian location of Liberum VPN on October 10, the home page responded with the same chain of code 307 redirects as the probes in Russia, Germany and Georgia, so this measurement showed no difference from foreign addresses.

For Ozon Bank customers abroad, the main issue in 2026 is the app: on August 12, it was removed from Google Play. The bank said that apps downloaded earlier keep working as before, and that you can log in to your personal account through a browser. Below: why this happened, where to get the app now, what our checks of the finance.ozon.ru website showed, and what we don’t know.

What happened on August 12: the Ozon Bank app was removed from Google Play

On August 12, 2026, the Ozon Bank app disappeared from Google Play: iPhones.ru and Expert reported it, and Expert’s correspondent checked the store personally. Ozon linked the removal to sanctions against the bank: according to Finmarket, the bank was added to the EU sanctions list in July and came under UK sanctions in early August. The company’s message, quoted by Finmarket, says: “All previously downloaded apps work as before. Customers can download the app in other stores.” The same message says you can use the web app and log in to your personal account through a browser at any time. The company also noted that the situation does not affect the bank’s operations: customers “continue to make payments, transfers and other transactions within Russia in full.” The message says nothing about using the bank from abroad.

On that day, the bank’s app was still available on the App Store, which Expert also checked. On August 14, Kommersant reported that, after the bank, Ozon’s own apps had also been removed from Google Play. Ozon told TASS that it had not broken the store’s rules and suggested that Android users download the apps from RuStore, AppGallery and Galaxy Store.

On August 21, Ozon’s main apps returned to Google Play, but the banking app was not among them: “The exception was Ozon Bank,” wrote T—J. On the same day, the bank warned about two fake apps posing as Ozon Bank on Google Play and demanded that Google block them (Anti-Malware.ru). We have not checked whether the bank’s app returned to Google Play later.

Ozon Bank’s website from abroad: what we checked

We looked at the finance.ozon.ru home page, without logging in and without the app. Times are UTC, 2026.

From whereWhenResult
Our server abroad, automated probeOct 3–10, 16 runsin 15 runs, a redirect through Ozon’s single sign-on service (sso.ozon.ru) and code 403 with an “Antibot Challenge Page”; in 1 run, no response within 25 seconds
The same server, manual requestOct 10, 17:55code 200, the home page titled “Ozon Bank: cashback up to 25% and free service for individuals” (in Russian); the Let’s Encrypt certificate passed validation
Russia: home networks in Moscow, Novosibirsk and Tomsk, a data center in Saint Petersburg (Globalping)Oct 10, 17:52–17:56a redirect (code 307) to the same address with an attempt number; the Let’s Encrypt certificate passes validation
Germany: a home network in Frankfurt, a data center in Falkenstein (Globalping)Oct 10, 17:52–17:56the same: code 307, the certificate passes validation
Georgia, Tbilisi: data center (Globalping)Oct 10, 17:55–17:56the same: code 307; the home probe at 17:52 could not resolve the site’s address because of a DNS failure on its side

A limit of the method. Globalping probes don’t keep cookies, so they get stuck at the first step: the site sent them back to the same address again and again with a new attempt number. The split into home networks and data centers comes from the measurement service’s own labels. We did not open the account or the app.

What follows from this. The certificate on Ozon Bank’s website is issued by Let’s Encrypt, and browsers trust it; this was also the case in our October 3 check. So the “Your connection is not private” error seen on the Sberbank or Alfa-Bank websites does not appear here in our measurements; it is covered in detail in our article about Mintsifry certificates. At the first step, the site responds the same way in Russia, Germany and Georgia. Our probe got the anti-bot check page at the Ozon single sign-on step (sso.ozon.ru), while a manual request from the same server opened the home page: the response changes from request to request, and one failure doesn’t mean much.

What to do if the Ozon Bank app isn’t working or isn’t in the store

  • Don’t delete the installed app. According to the bank, all previously downloaded apps work as before (Finmarket and Expert, August 12). We have not tested the app ourselves.
  • Your personal account in a browser. The bank reminded customers that they can use the web app and log in to their account through a browser. From abroad, we recommend starting with the website: it doesn’t need an app store.
  • Other stores for Android. The bank suggested downloading the app “in other stores” (Finmarket). For Ozon’s apps, the company named RuStore, AppGallery and Galaxy Store (Kommersant, August 14). Check the bank’s website to see where the banking app is available now.
  • Official sources only. After the removal, fake Ozon Bank apps appeared on Google Play; Anti-Malware.ru advises starting the download only from the bank’s own website. Links from ads and messengers are not suitable for this.

For comparison, you can see how people get into Sberbank and T-Bank from abroad: that is covered in our article on Sberbank Online and T-Bank abroad.

A Russian IP for Ozon Bank: testing it on the trial

The bank’s website was not part of the October 4 check through the Russian location of Liberum VPN: back then, the www.ozon.ru marketplace, a different website from the same group, responded with code 307 redirects in a loop and did not return a page. We requested the finance.ozon.ru home page through this location on October 10; the result is below. We can’t promise in advance that the bank’s website will open for you.

If the bank’s website or app won’t let you in from a foreign address, a Russian IP is worth a free try on the trial: perhaps it will work for you. In the Liberum VPS bot, launch the trial (7 days, no card needed), choose the Russian location, paste the subscription link you get into an app such as Happ, turn on the connection, and open finance.ozon.ru in a browser. This location’s address is shared by many customers of the service.

Keep the bank’s own protection in mind as well. It assesses more than the country you log in from and may detect a VPN, then treat a login or payment made through it as suspicious: ask for extra confirmation, hold the transaction, or temporarily close access to your account. Make sure in advance that the Russian number that receives your codes gets text messages while you travel, and save Ozon Bank’s support number for calls from anywhere in the world: +7 (495) 215-24-08 (as listed on finance.ozon.ru). How the location works is on the Russian IP address page.

On the evening of October 10, at 20:16 UTC, we requested the finance.ozon.ru home page through the Russian location of Liberum VPN with a tool that does not run JavaScript. The site responded with a code 307 redirect to the same address marked ?attempt=1, and to the repeat request with another 307, this time to ?attempt=2. Globalping probes from Russia, Germany and Georgia got the same anti-bot redirect chain that day, so this measurement shows no difference between the Russian and foreign addresses. We did not check how an ordinary browser that keeps cookies and runs scripts would behave, nor did we test logging in to the account.

What we don’t promise

  • That the app will return to Google Play. As of August 21, the banking app was not among the returned apps, and we have not checked the store since.
  • That a Russian address will get you past the anti-bot check. Our probe got the “Antibot Challenge Page” from our server abroad, and through the Russian location on October 10, the site answered our program with the same 307 redirects as the foreign probes.
  • That a VPN won’t get in the way. In our measurements, the bank’s website sent us to Ozon’s single sign-on service (sso.ozon.ru), which lives on the marketplace’s domain. And since April 2026, the Ozon marketplace has been restricting access with a VPN: according to TASS (as retold by ComNews on April 16), it advises users to “turn off the VPN if you are using one,” and on April 15 Hi-Tech Mail showed an error that the marketplace displayed when someone tried to open its website through a VPN. Our October 10 measurement did not show whether this affects the bank: through the Russian location, a program without JavaScript got no further than the 307 redirects.

Key takeaways

  • On August 12, 2026, the Ozon Bank app was removed from Google Play; Ozon linked this to sanctions.
  • According to the bank, an already installed app keeps working, and you can log in to your account through a browser.
  • The finance.ozon.ru website uses a Let’s Encrypt certificate; on October 10, its home page opened from our server abroad, but the probe more often got an anti-bot check.
  • Download the app only via a link from the bank’s website: fakes have appeared on Google Play.
  • On October 10, through the Russian location, the bank’s home page answered our program the same way it answered the foreign probes, with 307 redirects; you can check what it shows in your browser during the free trial, and it may work for you.
